Film Title: The Unhinging
The year is 2014. INDIA has been kidnapped. INDIA
is 16 years old. She is locked in a male's basement in a gothic, darkly lit,
Tudor style house located in a leafy, remote area. The kidnapper is mentally
ill, with no control over his actions and thoughts.
Prior, to kidnapping INDIA, he had kidnapped
young girls and held them hostage in his basement, regarding them as company
and friends. The basement is ill maintained, kept in horrific, dirty
conditions, disease ridden. INDIA has been locked in these conditions for 9
days, she has copious amounts of open wounds on her head and body. She is
becoming weak and fragile due to surviving on little sustenance and water. This
makes it incredibly hard for her to escape. INDIA's kidnapper, known as JACK, is
25 years old, he positions himself as authorative, superior to the young girl
due to his older age and tall height.
INDIA suddenly burst out of the basement door,
having used a knife to slice apart the corse rope wrapped tightly around her
wrists, she thumps the door down. INDIA sprints out of the basement and forces
the large, solid, gothic front door open straining her fragile frame.
INDIA runs, sprinting, gasping for clean air,
having previously been barley surviving on the little available oxygen in the
basement. Grabbing only a mobile phone from the small, darkly stained oak
console table next to the door, she exits the house in a daze. Having been
running for around 5 minutes, exhausted and bleary eyed, hallucinating with
exhaustion. INDIA finds herself lost in a vast wood, her visual awareness
is spinning. *Flashback to how INDIA being locked in the basement with her
hands tied by wrists, struggling to move* INDIA continues to run frantically
through the wood, the crispy, frost bitten winter leaves are cracking beneath
her feet. *Flashback of JACK slowly bringing a knife to INDIA's neck - blood
slowly oozes out of the fresh slice in her neck, INDIA's shaking with pain*
INDIA continues frantically running
through the forest, quivering as she is numbingly cold.
INDIA hears a twig snap behind her. She turns around to face her kidnapper
with a gun in his hand by the side of his body. As JACK raises the gun, the
title of the film appears on the screen - THE UNHINGING - with a voice over of
a 999 telephone call, "Hello, what's your emergency?". Closing with
INDIA's hand dropping the mobile phone.
How is the 'back story' (previous history of kidnappings) conveyed to the audience?
ReplyDeleteOn the artistic side, what will make this film opening different from all the other 'running through woods' chase sequences?
