Film Title: The Unhinging
Its 2014, INDIA, a 16 year old girl, has been
kidnapped. She is being held in the basement of a gothic, dimly lit, Tudor
period house located in an isolated, remote area of rural Britain. The
kidnapper is a 25 year old male who is mentally ill. The house is situated in a
large, woodland, far away from civilisation and amenities showing he chooses to
separate himself from society.
The kidnapper, JACK, has had a troubled past,
with an abusive mother and absent father. Growing up he was an outcast with no
loving family or friends. JACK is 25 years old, he positions himself as
authorative, superior to the young girl due to his older age and tall
height. This has led him to insanity, to the point to where he is deluded
and cannot tell the real from the unreal. Through his kidnapping, he is
searching the friends he never had, someone who he can manipulate.
The film starts; seeing INDIA’s eye look to the
left (right hand side of the frame). And there is a cross cut flashback showing
INDIA walk to the gym from a point of view shot behind her. She has her Ipod
headphones on listening to music, and is oblivious to the world around her. INDIAs
eyes then look to the right (left hand side of the frame) followed with a
flashback to a midi-shot showing an hand come across INDIAs top left shoulder
clutching a cloth and smothering her face, preventing her from breathing. INDIA
begins to panic, trying to fight the attacker off with her restricted arms and
hands; after half a minute of frantically panicking she sojourns with
exhaustion.
The basement INDIA is kept in is ill maintained,
kept in horrific, dirty conditions. She is tied up, however she is still fed
and given water as JACK is wanting to keep her alive to maintain her as
‘company’ – treating as property rather than a friend. INDIA has been locked in
these conditions for 72 hours, she has copious amounts of open wounds on her
head and body. She is becoming weak and fragile due to surviving on little
sustenance and water. This makes it incredibly hard for her to escape.
We see JACK look in the mirror, as we hear then
JACK being shouted at by his mother. JACK then smashes the mirror. This then
leads to a visual flashback, using a match shot to show the mirror intact. A
reflection in the mirror is a woman, JACKs mother, shouting at YOUNG JACK. We
then see the OLDER JACK pick up a piece of shattered mirror who starts walking
over to INDIA, INDIA is pleading for him to not hurt her. JACK then cuts the
side of INDIAs face with a shard of broken mirror. He drops the
mirror piece and walks out of the basement door. We then see a reaction shot in
the broken mirror puts showing only the cut on INDIA’s face. We see India
trying to reach for the piece of broken glass JACK has dropped. JACK goes up
stairs towards the attic, we hear a voiceover of a news reporter talking about
INDIA missing and how she is assumed dead. There are cuts to INDIA tipping the
chair she is in over and grabbing the piece of broken glass. We then see the lady
on the news again. We then see INDIA using the shard of mirror to cut the ropes
and freeing herself. She then runs to the basement door and opening it, she
peers out the door checking the coast is clear.
She then sneaks and runs
into the hallway, we see a tracking shot of their feet. On her way out of the
house she snatches a phone from a table by the door and runs from the house. We
see an over the shoulder shot as JACK see’s INDIA leave through the open door
and runs through the woodlands. We have a match shot where we see INDIA move
some branches with her hands. We then cut to her hands being tied up when she
was in the basement. We then see a low angle shot of INDIA running. There is
then a midi-shot and we see INDIAs neck which is bruised and cut. The shot
progresses into into a match shot where there is a knife next to INDIAs neck as
if JACK had just cut her.
There is then a point of
view shot of JACK and we see INDIA closely ahead of him.
We then see INDIA stop, her
lips are parted, breathing heavily. This then goes into a match cut to her lips
parted and JACKs fingers pressed to her lips in a shushing motion. INDIA looks
around and pulls out the phone calling 999.
JACK walks towards INDIA in
a point of view shoot; we see her lifting the phone to her ear and talking to
the operator. We hear INDIAs heartbeat as
INDIA turns around, showing her full face.
JACK raises the gun in his
hand, we then see the movie title.
We then see a phone on the floor abandoned and an
operator saying “That was INDIA”.
