Feedback

use of terminology (8-10 marks)

Watch using 'mise en scene'
Be sure to introduce editing as suggested

use of examples (16-20 marks)

Under exam conditions you would have to work straight to paper (note taking curtailed) to achieve this length

analysis, explanation, argument (16-20 marks)

Be sure to see 'both sides' of a suggestion; here, bands burdens

2. Extract from E.R Season 14, Episode 2 (Dir.Richard Thorpe, Written by Karen Maser and Lisa Zwerling, 2007) January 2013

1. Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs the representation of age using the following:

Feedback

use of terminology (8-10 marks)

spelling - mise-en-scene
You identify terms well.
You use the 3 point plan effectively
ambient/diagetic sound

use of examples (16-20 marks)

You are nearly always food at selecting relevant examples and giving details

analysis, explanation, argument (16-20 marks)

You are nearly always good at interpreting how camerawork (etc) contributes towards the construction of interpretations.

3. Extract from Downton Abbey, Series 1, Episode 1 (Dir. Brian Percival) May 2014

1. Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs the representation of class and status using the following:

  • Camera shots, angles, movement and composition
  • Editing
  • Sound
  • Mise en scene
Feedback

use of terminology (8-10 marks)

motivated edit, dialogue, diabetic sound
focus of address in dialogue (Carson/Mr Carson, O'Brien, Her Ladyship (etc); no greeting for delivery boy

use of examples (16-20 marks)

Use Lady Mary's character to illustrate class and status as the mise-en-scene is sumptuous and impressive
Give evidence of the contrasts below the stairs (pressured, crowded and noisy) and above stairs (orderly, hushed and leisurely). Soundscape useful here (to include)
Think of O'Brein's role, Mrs P the cook's, the housekeeper - what is their relative status?

analysis, explanation, argument (16-20 marks)

Ensure that your writing is always analytical. This means no starting a paragraph here (descriptive) without a reference to a technical code.
In several places your English comes unstuck as the choice of word is inappropriate. Sometimes you focus on a minor point but neglect a significant one.
